5 start review from Merrimon Books for In Her Bed

5+ Stars: An exquisite addition to the medieval historical romance Challon series!, October 29, 2007
By
D. Merrimon Crawford (Colorado) Merrimon Books.com

Threatened by Edward Longshanks, king of England, and Scottish clans jealous for her lands, Lady Aithinne Ogilvie has come up with a solution to protect herself and her people. With the help of those around her, she will take a man captive and produce an heir. Chained to Aithinne's bed and given a bewitching brew, an old dream haunts Damian St. Giles. Can the woman before him be better than the dream of his youth or a sign of all the trouble before him? Damian may be the cousin of Julian, the mighty Dragon of Challon, but he has certainly met his match in Aithinne! With hair and spirit touched by fairy fire, she schemes and plots in her wonderful heart-warming ways. She will do anything to protect her people...but can she protect her heart from love? When a woman calls on the Auld Ones for assistance, all her secrets, dreams and plans have a way of being answered --- just not quite in the way she imagined! Handsome and dark like a raven, Damian holds a dark secret --- can the firebrand Aithinne and the magic of Beltane bring love to this warrior's heart?

The second book of the Challon series has all the emotional and mystical intensity of the first and yet Deborah MacGillivray has given her readers more --- much more! The addition of minor characters such as Oona and Moffat, reveal even more nuances of the major characters and the medieval world. IN HER BED clearly demonstrates the exquisite breadth of this author's writing style. Here, her narrative technique varies in tone with amazing dexterity, combining humor with the emotional intensity, sensuous descriptive details with dynamic dialogue. The paranormal aspect adds a special delight to this medieval historical romance, realistically creating a background of the medieval world view and literary tradition. Fans of the first book, A RESTLESS KNIGHT will be thrilled to see Tamlyn and Julian appearing here in the second book, not as a mere mention but as an integral part of the story. Deborah MacGillivray brilliantly draws together the pagan and Christian religions through the love of a man and a woman. Readers will fall in love with both the hero and heroine --- and the minor characters as well! A splendid romance! While reading IN HER BED, I found myself laughing, smiling, open-eyed, and even a tear of two of joy at the end.

Each book of the Challon series is exquisite on its own, but together, both form a truly spectacular medieval narrative. Deborah MacGillivray utilizes the medieval forms of the saga and such longer narrative forms as the Arthurian Vulgate cycle yet she revitalizes them for the modern audience, by casting them as romances where love and the woman's viewpoint add exquisite and new insights into the medieval world. With IN HER BED, Deborah MacGillivray enchants romance fans and Medieval enthusiasts alike. As readers, watching this series unfold in the Dragon Challon and the Ogilvie figures, we see the birth of a Medieval legend, being created in today's world.

Review for Riding the Thunder

Another Winner!, October 26, 2007
By
Gerri Bowen "Contributing author in BLUE MOON... (Hanover, PA USA) -
Second in the Sisters of Colford Hall series, this book is as good as the first, The Invasion of Falgannon Isle. Jago Mersham arrives in Kentucky at The Windmill, his purpose to destroy Asha Montgomerie's world in order to avenge his father's death. Instead, he is knocked for a loop when he sees Asha, which is good because she is just as unsettled when they make eye contact. She fights the attraction; he embraces it until he welcomes his love for her. Unfortunately, he is still bound to destroy her world. Asha finally succumbs to her love for Jago, opening her entire being to this man, never doubting it is the right thing to do. To add to the tension, there is a psycho in town and you don't know when he is going to make his move.
The story is involved, the emotional stakes high. You believe these people could be destroyed beyond repair by the betrayal/abandonment of the other. How the author handles this made reading the book such a pleasure. Then there are the two ghosts who play a part in the story, Clint the cat, the Wurlitzer that selects the music it wants played, usually hits from the sixties, as well as other odd souls who find a home at Asha's diner, The Windmill. The songs mentioned in the book are ones I recognized, most of them from the sixties, and I could hear them in my mind, see couples dancing to the music. The song that best fit the story wasn't what you'd think, something from the past, but Mike Duncan's, Lost for Words; as if written for this story. I guess what makes this a winner is that the characters are likeable, story plausible and interesting, dialog witty, and the love and romance heartwarming. A keeper and one I highly recommend.

Marilyn Rondeau's review of Riding the Thunder

MacGillivray Steps up the STEAM !, October 25, 2007
By M. Rondeau (West Springfield, MA United States)

In the second stand-alone book of Deborah MacGillivray's - Sisters of Colford Hall series, this top selling author turns up the flame in keeping up the sensual stimulation she ignited with the first book THE INVASION OF FALGANNON ISLAND. While his elder brother Desmond is launching a takeover attempt on Falgannon Island as revenge and ruination on the Montgomerie family's empire, Jago Mershan is sent to the other side of the pond to launch the takeover on the Montgomerie's assets in Kentucky. All seemed simple enough until Jago got an up close and personal look at the very sleek and unbelievably sexy Asha Montgomerie. Nope -- not even the spooky paranormal happenings at Asha's Windmill Cafe were going to scare him off - for after one look Jago was primed and ready. Ready to take Asha for the ride of a lifetime in which both would feel the thunder of an exciting sensual journey.

*** For those of us who grew up in the 60's this very hot and sensual read is going to be a phenomenal treat as the memories and the music of my teen years all came rushing back. MacGillivray's story of the present day passionate love affair between Asha and Jago, set against the backdrop of the ghostly lovers, Tommy Grant and Laura Valmont making their afterlife home at the Windmill Café emotionally poignant. Having Asha experiencing flashbacks to the other couple's tragic love story and murder; along with the ghostly antics of her decades old Wurlitzer continuously playing the romantic ballad, "Tell Laura I Love Her"... complete with other tunes from the 60's was a truly clever strategy. Peppering the story with a set of quirky and lovable secondary characters (including a mischievous cat) plus humorous and titillating dialogs kept the pace lively to continue reading into the wee hours of the morning.

In essence, Ms. MacGillivray not only writes her stories hot and steamy but treats readers to a gifted lyrical voice. Impeccably written, her characters spring to life bringing the reader ringside to feel all the intrigue, passion, and love. Book two in this entertaining Sisters of Colford Hall series is definitely stand-alone but I guarantee it will have the new reader scurrying about for book one and anxiously awaiting the next in this series. Cut Travel Time In Half With Deborah MacGillivray

12:07 PM PDT, October 25, 2007
On a recent trip to hot air balloon over the fall grape harvest in Sonoma County California, I discovered a treasure at an airport bookstore…In Her Bed! What an intriguing and engrossing tale of Damian St Giles, a man I was not prepared to fall in love with after reading A Restless Knight. I found myself thinking (and saying aloud on the plane) “I did NOT see that coming!” time after time as Lady Aithinne did many of things I would like to have done to such a yummy, dark warrior.

Steeped in MacGillvray’s rich and deep storytelling spirit, this is yet another thread that weaves in and out of other tales…reminding me of past passions that connected with my soul and of those powerful tales that are yet to come in the Scottish Highlands of MacGillvray’s world. This book will keep you guessing, fulfill your desire for an exceptional read and paint the pristine clouds of your world with magic, myth and love that transcends the ages!

Riding the Thunder on the Heels of a Dark Warrior

Shortly after traveling to the west coast for pleasure, business took me to the east coast and more hours of long waits in planes and airports…a perfect setting for relishing Deborah MacGillvray’s delightfully “toe-curling and hand-clapping (no matter where you are)” book Riding The Thunder. Already a card-carrying fan of Invasion of Falgannon Isle, I was completely blown away when I met Jago and Asha because they were so vividly different (and delicious) from their siblings in the Hebrides. MacGillvray has a wonderful ability to intertwine stories, history and locales…but never does she mix or water-down the characters or their eccentric sidekicks..or cats.
Telling this intricately-choreographed tale, with a clock that turned forward and backward on a song, MacGillvray leads you to a perfect ending that wraps up not-so-perfect murder, deceit, revenge and sweet deception that tastes a bit like an iced Pepsi and a chilled Almond Joy. Hey Deborah, when are you going to write Netta and Liam’s story???? (I’m intrigued)

Romantic Times ad in November 2007 issue "This second story about the Mershan brothers is as interesting, fast moving, suspenseful and fun as the first one." - Susan Mobley, Romantic Times

*****I fell in love with the characters in this story and wanted a happy ending for each of them. Ms. MacGillivray's storylines do more than give you an escape from reality, they allow you to dream of a world where happily-ever-afters are possible and love conquers all. Beautifully done! - Chrissy Dionne, Romance Junkies

*****The great thing about Macgillivray's "series" novels is they get better with each release. - Amy Wolff Sorter, author of Soul Obsession

*****This is a very compelling tale about lost lives and loving forever. It takes you back through visions to an earlier time and literally a time warp in some cases, like the haunting. I love the jukebox playing only music from the Sixties and that it is always apropos to what his happening in the story. The motley cast of characters is also a great ensemble, with side plots all throughout the story and meshing so well tying it all together. The past and the present meet and come full circle to give justice to a wrong done. This is a tear jerker at times but be prepared to laugh, cry, and sing along to your favorite oldies. If you like young love, time warps, haunting ghosts or jukeboxes, and even riding the thunder on a Harley, this is the one for you. - Lainey, Coffeetime Romance Reviews

Lady Tamlyn MacShane had the gift of the kenning, but she did not see soon enough ahead of what was about to happen. The Dragons were invading Glenrogha and there was naught she could do to stop them...or could she?

Lord Julian Challon enraged at the thoughts of his men trying to press rape on an innocent woman of Glenrogha, he interceded to stop the men before succeeding. Her eyes captivated and drew feelings inside he had never experienced before. She was the woman who could make his dreams of family and a son come true, its a shame she wanted nothing to do with him.

Julian is haunted by dreams of his brother's untimely death and the massacre of Berwick. He just wants peace and to share his life with this Highland Enchantress. But first the two must come together to save the lands from destruction. Along the way love seeps into their hearts, but will Tamlyn give in and let her heart fall to the one man she despised?

Deborah MacGillivray transports the reader back into the Highlands of Scotland year 1296. Lively, spirited characters brought this story of historical romance to life right before my eyes. This is the first book in The Dragons of Challon Series and if the rest of the books are as wonderful as this one, you better believe they will all be on the top of my bookshelf.

Magically and skillfully written, A Restless Knight will bewitch you. I have discovered Ms. MacGillivray's books are addictive, staying up late into the morning reading ensures, no reader will be disappointed. 5 Hearts

5 Star Review for Riding the Thunder

Very enticing romance with a ghostly duo and a cat with no name., October 15, 2007
By
Detra Fitch (USA)

Jago Fitzgerald (Mershan) would do anything for his oldest brother, Des. After their father committed suicide, in front of ten-year-old Des, Des became the man of the family. Des helped out their mother and practically raised Jago and Trev (Jago's twin). After years of planning, the time for revenge has come. Mershan International has completed all the arrangements for Montgomerie Enterprise's hostile takeover. This action will complete the Mershan family's revenge on the Montgomerie family. It does not matter, especially to Des, that the man who committed the ruin of their family is dead. Closure would come with the ruin of the granddaughters. Des and Trev were off dealing with two of the Montgomerie sisters overseas. Jago's target is in Kentucky.

Asha Montgomerie's brother, Liam, is doing his best to keep the family's horse ranch. Their father, in England, is doing everything he can to force the sell. Asha is being pushed by their father to sell her restaurant, The Windmill. But Asha is the sole owner of the restaurant and she will NEVER sell it. Asha also owns the small motel, swim club, laundromat, and the drive-in theater. The Windmill is a haven for lost souls, of the past and the present. People in the area know that there are unspoken rules about The Windmill Restaurant (and the drive-in). The first rule is to never touch the Wurlitzer 2000 jukebox in a threatening manner. The restaurant's ghostly duo does not take it kindly. The second rule is to change nothing. Third is not to sit in a certain booth after dark. There are other rules, but the locals simply accept them all as normal.

When Jago drives up, it does not take Asha long to figure out he works for the company trying to claim her teeny community and wipe its existence off the map. She has no idea how far up the corporate ladder Jago really is though. As for Jago, the instant he looks at his alleged enemy's granddaughter, he knows that she is destined to be his. The question is how to get Asha without her realizing exactly who he is and why he came to the area in the first place. The more Jago sticks around, the more he finds himself becoming part of the strange community. Jago begins to understand Asha's fey spot in the world. A sanctuary for ghosts, a jukebox with a mind of its own, a Cajun cook, a cat with no name, a guy named "Oo-it" and an aging Jedi Master. Jago has to make a choice between the love for his brother and his growing love for Asha and the area. A storm is coming...

***** This is book two in the Sisters of Colford Hall series. In my opinion, it is even better than the first (The Invasion of Falgannon Isle). Trust me, that is saying something! Author Deborah MacGillivray gives each character a realistic touch, but the main characters (Jago and Asha) are downright striking. I came to deeply care for them. The secondary and background characters snuck up on me. I have no idea how these crazy people became so important to me. But as I neared the end of the book, I dreaded the thought of never seeing them again. Now THAT is talent! All-in-all, I found this to be a delicious frolic in a magical world. Perfect! *****

If such a place existed harboring 213 single braw Scotsmen, would you be tempted to travel to Falgannon in search of a husband? The Isle is cursed you see, there is a shortage of marriageable women...or actually truth be told there are no marriageable women on Falgannon besides B.A. Montomerie and she does not count.

B.A. Montgomerie was the only person that could break the curse being held against Falgannon Isle; she just needed a black haired, green eyed Outlander to fall in love with. Montgomeries were a stubborn breed and if one finds love, they'll resort to chaining a man up in their bedroom if it comes down to it. Upon trying to play matchmaker for the single Scots, B.A. finds herself falling in love with the green eyed warlock that came in with the Vikings.
Desmond Mershan had one thing on his mind and that was Revenge, he promised his mother and himself that the Montgomeries would pay for the pain they've caused. Only he had no idea the spell B.A. Montgomerie would weave into his heart could be his downfall. He planned on using her and her body and then taking what was rightfully his, the northern one third of Falgannon Isle. But neither would give in or give up without a fight.

The Curse must be broken before any woman can produce female children. It is all up to B.A. and Desmond to come together in love to save the life of the Falgannonions. When B.A. finds out the truth about Desmond, she still does not give up the hope of everlasting love between them. It takes a tug of war and a kiss of near death to realize, what was in the past should remain and keep your eyes open to the future.

Deborah MacGillivray is a spell weaving author that has the magic to capture the reader's heart from the very start of her book, The Invasion Of Falgannon Isle. Bantering Scots, an over-fed chaperon kitty, and a cup of green goop that'll cure a hangover are but a few hidden treasures inside the cover of a fabulous Historical Romance that will grip your heart. A tear was shed a few times and then a river of tears flowed nearing the end, so when you read this story make sure the tissues are always near by.

Seven sisters waiting love, one has already captured her green eyed man, and from what I can imagine this book is the first in a tantalizing series yet to come. I WILL have those books on my TBR list as soon as they reach the shelves. 5 Hearts to Ms. MacGillivray

Perfect Romances for an Autumn Evening

Autumn, when the air is crisp, the days are growing shorter, is a magical time of year for me. It's one of my favourite times of year, almost filled with special memories. So it isn't surprising I would chose this time of year to open two romance novels. The Sisters of Colford, is a series of seven books, about seven sisters who find love better the second time around. For various reasons the loved once, but were hurt. Romance broke up, sweethearts were lost. They have spent time shutting themselves off from the possibility of loving again. They are busy women, vital women. They have a place in the world and enjoy life.

Yet, romance has a crazy way of turning up when you least expected it, and that is what happens to the Montgomerie sisters. In the 30s, they are confident women, able to love a man with deeper emotions, only that are so sure they are ready to take that risk again.

So one October three men show up in B.A's, Asha's and Raven's world - the Mershan brothers. Out for vengeance to right a wrong done to their family, they are not prepared for the Montgomerie sister!

Aided along by some very unusual pussycats....these stories are fun, emotional and just perfect for an autumn evening curled up before the fire.

Book Description
213 SINGLE SCOTSMEN

There was something about the Brigadoon-like Falgannon, something that kept most of its male inhabitants unwed. From Michael the Story to Callum the Bicycle--and we mustn't forget The Cat Dudley, the slyest poker-playing moggie in the Outer Hebrides--every male of the Isle had happiness dependent upon that of its Lady. So things had been since Pictish times, and so they would be long after the present day.

Despite her machinations, to this point B.A. Montgomerie had been unable to make her men happy. Her first marriage had been against their advice; her husband had been an Irishman, true, but he had failed to meet other necessary requirements...and things had ended badly. Now, another Irishman had come--and was making the natives restless. Yes, the men of Falgannon could sense Desmond Mershan's conquering Viking spirit and his desire for B.A.--which B.A. could sense herself. And while her men would never let anything happen that she didn't want, this Irishman had come to pillage and loot, and nothing was going to stop him. Staring into his vibrant green eyes, B.A. anticipated the battles to come.

From Booklist

Although the book is set in the present, Falgannon Isle, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, seems timeless. B. A. Montgomerie is the Lady of the Isle, making sure that everyone is employed. Her current plan is to use her Web site to import prospective wives for the men on the island, since, thanks to an ancient curse, the population remains primarily male. The men are all for it, and when Desmond Mershan shows up, he seems the answer to their troubles. Although Desmond is there to talk about building a resort, he has a hidden agenda, which involves ruining the Montgomeries, as B. A.'s grandfather ruined his family. But all the islanders perceive is that Desmond is Irish, with black hair and green eyes, just like the man fabled to come and end the island's curse by marrying the Lady of the Isle. What makes MacGillivray's romance so special are the eccentric characters, right down to the cat, and Desmond and B.A.'s growing relationship. Maria Hatton Copyright © American Library Association. Romantic Times

This is an entertaining, humorous and heartwarming tale of love, friendship and a bit of magic. The hero's struggle to make peace with his past and the heroine's determination to help him are nicely depicted. The secondary characters are great fun, especially The Cat Dudley, and the peek into the lives of the main character's siblings whets the appetite for their stories. ----Susan Mobley

It was all part of the plan. While his brother was in Scotland dethroning the Lady of Falgannon, Jago Mershan was headed to Kentucky. There he would do his share in avenging his father on the Montgomeries. Only, there was a monkey wrench in the works Just looking at his alleged enemy's granddaughter made Jago think of his classic black '67 Harley Electra Glide, a motorcycle with clean lines and sleek curves that promised the ride of a man's life. Asha was all woman--and the only woman for him. He'd bet she could go from zero to one hundred in the blink of an eye...and not even her claims of paranormal happenings in the diner she ran could put him off. He knew magic: He had a special name for the sights, the sounds, the tastes and smells of that perfect ride. There might be a storm coming, but it was one of passion, and together he and Asha would be... RIDING THE THUNDER

Romantic Times ad in November 2007 issue "This second story about the Mershan brothers is as interesting, fast moving, suspenseful and fun as the first one." - Susan Mobley, Romantic Times

*****I fell in love with the characters in this story and wanted a happy ending for each of them. Ms. MacGillivray’s storylines do more than give you an escape from reality, they allow you to dream of a world where happily-ever-afters are possible and love conquers all.

5 Hearts Review for In Her Bed

10/11/2007 - Crystal Reviews

In Her Bed by Deborah MacGillivray *print book*

Damian St. Giles covets his cousins betrothed beauty, Tamlyn. At the Beltane party Damian drowns his sorrows in imbibing in too much mead, as well as a special brew provided by triplet brothers. Waking up shackled to a bed is not so bad when the beauty Damian craves is right beside of him, touching and caressing his naked body. The brothers did promise the special brew would make all of his dreams come true....

Princess Aithinne Ogilvie must find a way to keep Lyonglen out of the hands of men that want the land for their greedy selves. The only way she can come up with is to give birth to a bairn, but the only problem, was that Aithinne was not married or even betrothed. Stealing a man for breeding purposes seems a little extreme, but what other choices are there? When a spell is woven between Aithinne and Damian and the first night of intercourse takes place, there is no turning back. Both lives will either flourish or the spell will cause more lies that will be added to the turmoil that is Aithinne's life. She wants to keep Damian, but his heart lies with another. Can he come to love Aithinne as much as he loves her own cousin? What is yet to come of Lyonglen and the bairn Aithinne so desires?

Deborah MacGillivray enchants the reader with her historical romance In Her Bed. The characters were described beautifully and easily came to life before my eyes. It is so rare to see a lady take charge in a historical by making the first move on a man, but I found it endearing. This book brought warmth on a cold day with the heated love making scenes and the blossoming love between the characters; and don't forget the twists! I would highly recommend you get your own copy today and curl up with this wonderfully written book. 5 Hearts

Highland Press received RWA approval

Today my one-author anthology, Cat O' Nine Tales, from Highland Press, went to the printers so it won't be long now until the Collector's Edition of my Short Stories and Novellas is out.

It was very special day for me in another way. Not only did this anthology move that much closer to hitting the shelves, I also received a notification from Romance Writers of America that Highland Press now has RWA approval, so all HP writers can enter their novels in the RITA, their award for print authors. This excited me because there are a lot of wonderful authors with novels out that should have this chance to have their novels considered for this honour.

So Congrats to Highland Press owner, Leanne Burroughs.

From Here to There....Eventually

These days my travels are confined to trips in my mind. I have heavy deadlines facing me. One Snowy Knight is due February 1st, and Yield to the Knight is due July 1st. These will be a continuation of my Dragons of Challon series I’m doing for Kensington Zebra Historicals. So I thought I would take you on a wee tour inside my books for my “travels”.

book coverMy newest novel (4th book, 2nd for Dorchester’s Love Spell - second book out in two months) was just released. It’s the second in the Sisters of Colford Hall series. You will have to wait until the third book to actually see Colford Hall, which I set in England. The first book, The Invasion of Falgannon Isle, takes place in Scotland. Since the books are Paranormal Contemporary Romances, with a dash of Fantasy, they are set largely in my imagination more than specific locales. The settings in each book are very real places, only when I started writing, I found they became places in my heart, spun from my childhood memories. Time changes most parts of the world. So I chose to work from memories, fashioning for fiction. This permitted me to world-build. When you world build you create your own rules.

book soverSuch as the setting of the Isle of Falgannon. It’s not a real isle. You won’t find it on maps. I needed to do certain things, such as create my own ferry for the isle. I wanted it to run on my own schedule, and I didn’t think the real ferry services would appreciate me having cars crashing into them! It was easier to conjure my own small ferry and control it as I needed for the story. For the isle, well, I mostly used parts of Lewis in the Hebrides. It’s a very beautiful island. (Though in my video, there are actually two shots of England. I needed steep hills to my island, where as the Hebrides often are very flat and not many trees. I “borrowed” a wee bit of the Sasunnach. I don’t think they minded!)

white sands I mean, who couldn’t look at these beautiful images and not conjure an island owned by a woman, under an ancient curse, which sees the island’s 213 bachelors without wives? Wouldn’t a woman who owned this beauty fight to preserve it?beach
Thus was born B.A. Montgomerie and Des Mershan, and the small cursed Falgannon Isle.

beach near midnightSince I didn’t want to be a ‘one trick pony’, I moved the setting of the second book, Riding the Thunder across the Pond to another place of rugged beauty — Kentucky. Kentucky was settled very heavily by Scots. CalanaisIt’s still very common in Central Kentucky, around the Kentucky river region, to see names like Montgomery, Mackenzie, Grant, Macpherson, Macphee….I suppose they felt comfortable there for in places Kentucky evokes parts of Scotland. I guess why I love both places equally.

kentuckyWhen I was growing up, I spent two weeks to a month in early summer on the Kentucky River, before going back to Britain after the school year, and when I came back in the autumn, I again stayed there. Nicholasville, Buena Vista, Lake Herrington, Wilmore, Danville, Camp Nelson…oh, they are still there. Some parts have changed a great deal in the passing years. Nicholasville used to be a very small town 20 miles from Lexington. Urban sprawlky river now sees the two towns nearly joined. However, in the 1960s, there was a lot of farm land between the two places. There were drive-ins, skate rinks — and a restaurant called The Windmill. Kentucky RiversThe setting for my book did once exist. There was a real motel, drive-in, restaurant, swim-club, a horse farm, and a small skate rink. The Windmill in Riding the Thunder drew life from those seeds.

waterfall With splendour such as this, can you not see why I had to send one of my “sisters” to Kentucky to “ride the thunder”? You will see many of these images in my videos for both books.
